iRobot Roomba i7156 promises best results because of its strong suction power, different cleaning stages, and automatic floor detection. In our Roomba i7 review we got to the bottom of this claim and tested it for its thoroughness and usability.

Scope of delivery of the robot vacuum

- iRobot Roomba i7156
- Charging base
- Power cable
- Dual Mode Virtual Wall (with batteries)
- Replacement filter
- Replacement side brush
- User manual

Installation & commissioning of the iRobot Roomba i7156

The first pleasant discovery appears when unpacking the robot cleaner: No countless components to assemble, and no reams of additional parts to irritate. Just the iRobot Roomba i7156 and the corresponding charging base. And in a little box the accessories: a power supply unit (length: 2 m), the Dual Mode Virtual Wall (incl. batteries), an additional filter and an additional side-brush. With a diameter of 35.3 cm and a height of just 9.2 cm it looks quite handy. The design with just 3 buttons (Home, Clean and Spot-Cleaning) appears very user-friendly. The dust bin, the filter and the rubber brushes on the robot vacuum can be removed, cleaned and reinserted easily.

When connecting the charging base there isn't much to observe: distance to all sides according to the user manual, no steps in the immediate vicinity, and no small items lying around (including cables). Before the first run It is recommended to charge the battery.

How to operate the robot cleaner

Now the Roomba i7 test can really get started. Right after it has supplied itself with energy at the charging base it is ready for the first laps through your home. However, in order to exploit the robot vacuum’s full potential it is necessary to install the iRobot app (iOS or Android) on your smartphone. The impression of easy usability is also confirmed: After a few minutes the app is installed and connected with your robot cleaner. During its first mapping run iRobot's i7 uses its intelligent navigation (Imprint) to orientate in your home. By using laser technology the iRobot Roomba i7156 learns, maps and adapts to your home, and after a short time it plans the routes through your home itself. Furthermore, the smart robot cleaner provides you with maps of your rooms which are accessible in the app. With them, you can specify what your household robot should vacuum. Even defining the exact time is possible: have the Roomba i7 vacuum your home at a set time every day, e.g., while you're working away from home. And it keeps you informed. Via the app it lets you know how well it is doing or when it is done.

The 3 cleaning modes in the Roomba i7 test

In our Roomba i7 review also the 3 available cleaning modes must be mentioned: on its cleaning lap the iRobot Roomba i7156 drives in wave patterns through the room and already after the first run it looks really clean. Thanks to the Dirt Detect mode, iRobot's i7 finds stronger soiled areas and cleans them with a higher intensity. Furthermore, there is the Spot-Cleaning mode. In this mode you direct the robot to a specific position and from there it vacuums a certain area. It is also noticeable that iRobot's i7 stops in time before it falls down stairs. Abyss sensors prevent it from falling.

Last but not least: a small but very convenient detail: the Dual Mode Virtual Wall. By using a small, unimpressive tower you can define no-go areas for your robot vacuum. You can choose between a circular area with a diameter of approx. 60 cm (Halo position), or a straight “wall” to block openings up to 3 m.

Roomba i7 test: our conclusion

iRobot Roomba i7156 scores a lot of points:

- easy usability
- strong suction power
- quick and easy installation of the robot and the app
- laser technology navigation (Imprint)
- cleaning plan: room, time and intensity can be defined
- Dirt Detect mode: stronger soiled areas are automatically cleaned with a higher intensity
- thanks to the Dual Mode Virtual Wall no-go areas can be defined
- uncomplicated final cleaning and maintenance
- good results when vacuuming pet hair

The iRobot Roomba i7 is not suitable if the square footage of your home exceeds 185 m2. Furthermore, navigation or control is only possible via app or voice control. Without this, the i7 can be started (three functions can be activated directly on the device: Clean, Home, Spot-Cleaning) but the potential cannot be exploited to any extent.

The Roomba i7 review can be summarised as follows: iRobot's robot vacuum was convincing. Once a certain basic order is established at home it is a good purchase for daily cleaning.
